Колледжу Канады влепили штраф $30,000,000: банкротство на пороге

The college is unable to pay the unprecedented fine for Canada. Negotiations with the regional authorities have also yielded no results. The reason for the fine is the English language.

LaSalle College in Montreal said that its existence is under threat. The Quebec government imposed two consecutive fines on it for a total of almost $30 million. The reason for the sanctions was exceeding the limit on enrolling students in English-language programs.

At the end of June, the private college received a letter from the Ministry of Advanced Education, which stated that the college must pay $21,113,864 for enrolling 1,066 students in excess of the quota for the 2024-2025 academic year. This amount is in addition to the $8.7 million fine that was imposed last year for the same violation.

LaSalle was the only college, private or public, that was fined by the government for violating the quota in 2024. The others were able to reach an agreement with the ministry. For example, the state-run Cégep Marie-Victorin initially received 232 places for English-speaking students. The quota was then expanded by 100 places. So now LaSalle will try to challenge the draconian punishment in court because of the English language.
